TSN Broadcast Deal Extended 3 Years

Published on May 28, 2015 9:16 PM

TSN and Bell Media press releases.

Extending the deal from through 2018 (I believe there was a network option to extend through 2019) to through 2021 after one season is interesting. Two things from TSN’s side: they must see great potential in the CFL property to want to extend early at what they would believe is a better rate now than potentially could be in 4 years and they must be happy with the first year of the deal. From the CFL’s side, it is surprising they would accept an extension now without knowing where their would put them in contract negotiations in a few years unless there was some up front incentive.

Of course, it is all speculation, since without any details on the terms it is impossible to judge.

Update: Additional media analysis on the announcement.

CFL Sells Grey Cup Presenting Rights to Shaw

Published on May 8, 2015 7:53 PM

If the Grey Cup belongs to all Canadians, then I think we deserve to know what the rights sold for, and what the length of the multi-year term is. Only with that information can we truly judge what the league has done. If the purchaser doesn’t want the cost revealed, then no sale.

Cohon stated all through his term there were discussions about selling the Grey Cup naming rights, but it never happened. I wonder if he advised against and is that why it didn’t occur until now, or did just the right size of cheque come along.

To Shaw: are the player achievement awards the Stars of the Week? If so, a little less corporate speak and more familiar terms will go farther.

Halifax Voters Should Decide on Stadium

Published on May 6, 2015 9:10 PM

Calling for a vote now on the assumption that a capital reserve fund is for a stadium is premature. They could put this money away for years (and would have to in order to have any substantial amount for a stadium project), administration could change and it could be used for many different things. When someone proposes it is used for a stadium, vote then.

Update: And a councillor agrees.
