Don Matthews: 1939-2017

Published on June 14, 2017 9:48 PM

The tributes to Matthews along with the explanations of his personality were pouring in today. Among the words printed on The Don today were The Athletic’s Seven Stories, a piece by Steve Simmons, an article in the National Post, tributes from figures in the CFL and out along with remembrances from his stops in Montreal, Edmonton and Baltimore (Bonus Baltimore).

I lot of media tweeting their tributes to Don with the prefix they didn’t see eye-to-eye. Don thought his job was to win, and by his record that is what he did. My condolences to the Matthews family.

Edmonton Awarded 2018 Grey Cup

Published on June 5, 2017 10:14 PM

The league announced today that Edmonton has been named host of the 2018 Grey Cup, which will be the fifth time Edmonton and Commonwealth Stadium has hosted Canada’s national football championship.

In the early reports of the awarding, there is an interesting comment that Calgary believes their facility is no longer up to the standards of hosting the Grey Cup with the quality of new stadiums that have opened in the past few years. With Montreal (still Olympic Stadium snow concerns) and Hamilton (can’t get their bid act together) out of the rotation, host sites are shrinking. This isn’t something a city wants to be hosting more often then every 8-9 years to make it an occurrence rather than regular event.

Update: More affordable, but forgets to mention twice as many seats. Much easier to cut prices in half in those conditions.
