A homegrown boy who returned to star in Ottawa for eight seasons, then continued a presence in the Ottawa sports scene after his football retirement. My condolences to the Sowieta family.

CFL’s Diversity is Strength Video

The 30-second video, updating and riffing on a section from 2008’s “This is Our League”, is being inserted as an ad during Week 9 game broadcasts.

The CFL always targets their base. I realize that due to the broadcast agreement, these spots likely cost the league very little, if anything. It’s time they direct their message at those who may not be familiar with the league and what it stands for. The current climate and the nature of this message is a perfect opportunity. This ad airing in a prime nightly news spot for a week would get that message to a wider audience. Now, what to do about the millennials.

Fines, Fines, Week 7 and 8 Fines

Two fines for Week 8, one additional fine for Week 7. Surprised by the miss, did the Stamps submit tape of the infraction late? If only teams could self-police before the infraction.

Three Fined For Week 7

As the numbers come down slowly, it appears each year players need to relearn respect for their peers and that these dangerous and unnecessary hits have no place in the game.

Jerry “Soupy” Campbell: 1944-2017

Extreme longevity with excellence is a rare commodity. Soupy was an All-Star for the seven full seasons he spent in Ottawa, where he didn’t miss a game. My condolences to the Campbell family.

Week 6 Finds Four Fined

With three fines for unnecessary roughness, early season lack of smarts and respect continues as is the pattern seen in previous years.

CFL Restricts Video Review

Not just one challenge per team for penalties, but one challenge per team period. Journo’s trying to make hay with the timing (too slow, too fast) but well supported throughout the league from those previously abusing the system. Fans called for it, now all fans have to remember challenges are for those rare, game changing calls, not every 10-yard gain or 1st quarter illegal contact. Be prepared to live with the human element. Fans couldn’t before, and that led us here.
