Home Again: Frank Cosentino’s New Book

Published on December 28, 2014 12:32 PM

I missed linking to this when I saw it tweeted in early Dec., so apologies to those who missed getting this as a Christmas gift. Picking up where A Passing Game left off, Home Again: Canadian Football 1995-2014 is the third in Cosentino’s series on the behind closed doors boardroom and business stories of the league interweaved with anecdotes from the field and game. I assume that similar to the preceding books, his access to league minutes and correspondence will reveal many interesting truths about this tumultuous time and return to popularity.

Mr. Cosentino has provided a substantial record of the history of Canadian Football. I encourage all interested in this history to support Mr. Cosentino’s efforts with a purchase (which will hopefully lead to publication of his 100 Years Of The Grey Cup: A Celebration book affected by his publisher’s demise). Also available in an ebook version, look for CFLdb to be giving away copies of Home Again leading up to the 2015 season.

“Tricky” Dick Thornton: 1939-2014

Published on December 20, 2014 9:45 AM

A gifted athlete who lined up all over the field (QB, receiver, defensive back, kick returner), Thornton was as well known off the field. Self-promoting, in a tongue-in-cheek way, he was a character, entertaining and likeable and captured interest in Toronto. Today’s players could learn a lot from Thornton on how to be a confident but self-deprecating, conceited but humble persona and have fun with the game while they are young.

My condolences go out to the Thornton family.

Prepared for an eventuality of life after football, Kwame Osei is set to have a large impact on kids lives as a coach and author. It is not what you do in football, it is what you do in life.

Check out the book If Not Me, Then Who: The Tale of the Little Eagle.

Update: Also mentioned in this Globe and Mail article on the CFL in Fort McMurray.
