Jack Gotta: 1930-2013

Published on June 29, 2013 9:05 PM

Such news is a terrible way to end a great start to the season. I fondly remember Jack Gotta, one of the great personalities to grace the CFL. CFLdb sends its condolences to the Gotta family.

Update: Steve Simmons remembers. Gotta’s stories are also featured in Huddling Up by Jeffrey Goodman.

Eskimos Image an Issue

Published on June 25, 2013 12:08 AM

It was a big issue for the media that the Eskimos did not release their cuts/roster by the deadline and they made that clear. Their explanation that they registered their transactions with the league but delayed making the information public was the obvious answer. This has happened before, though probably not in Edmonton, and while the media would like fines to discourage this practice it seems communication as to when they will be announced will keep the scribes from staying up waiting to file their story.

NBC Sports Network to Carry CFL Again

Published on June 21, 2013 12:49 PM

NBC Sports Network will carry 14 regular season games, the Division Finals and the Grey Cup this year. Regular season is up from 9 games in 2012, though the full playoffs were carried last year. No word on ESPN2 coverage as speculated based on info on ESPN Media Zone listing five CFL games in June and July.

Argos Varsity Game No Step For Return

A fairly non-sensationalist look at the stadium situation of the Argos, the NIMBY situation that left them out of a return to Varsity and a review of the standard non-options.

TSN's CFL Promotional Campaign

Sounds like a nice cross section of players and interesting take on presenting the personalities. I will be watching to see how visible these promos are, especially print and outdoor ads.

US TV Announcement Next Week

Published on June 8, 2013 10:32 AM

From the commissioner’s mouth. I know all CFL fans in the US are anxiously waiting for this and some very critical that the US broadcast deal takes so long. If announced next week it is a little earlier this year. The number of games and broadcaster matters more than when it is announced I feel.

'Twas the Night Before the Launch

And Jeff Hunt answers a few questions. From what I’ve seen of the name critics, they are the typical vocal person with no backing. They have all the answers and can tell you what is terrible, won’t work, but provide no remedy that gets 2% support let alone 50%. They have never created a brand or run a business and the only thing larger than their ego is their desire to see things fail, even when it would hurt institutions they support.

There needs to be no negativity around the name. Let the people of Ottawa and time decide.

Still selling, too. Good to see as the league needs increases everywhere this year to offset the drop Hamilton will see for their season in Alumni Stadium in Guelph.
