The catalyst of one Stampeder partner wishing to sell his stake led to the Calgary Flames taking majority ownership of the Stampeders, though the exact makeup of ownership stakes was not revealed. The Flames have between a 50 and 75% stake is what we are led to believe from official comments and rumours.

The reasoning stated for the change now is to provide the sports management group behind the Flames and their properties greater control in the Stampeder club for cross-promotion and marketing. Also raised was the possibility of the Flames/Stampeders combining on a proposal for a downtown stadium/arena complex to replace the Saddledome and McMahon Stadium.

In an postscript, the Stampeders extended the contract of coach John Hufnagel until the end of the 2016 season.
