I like the design, something Taylor Field has needed for a long time (and could have been built how cheaply 10-15 years ago?). Though many negative Nelly’s across the country herald it as notice no new stadium will be built, it is obvious this is driven by the 2013 Grey Cup and the prosperity of the ‘Riders. Nothing as elaborate would be done if such a big event (which has changed since Regina last hosted) didn’t sit between now and their planned new stadium.

While not expensive at $14 million, spending $8 million in reserves plus a $6.2 million low interest loan from the provincial government for four seasons doesn’t seem cost recoverable even. Obviously they have the numbers, but I calculate about $1 million more a year in ticket sales and maybe $500,000 in corporate boxes, and even with Grey Cup profit, they might just cover the cost. That’s if the team and economy stay hot. Quite a risk in order to provide additional money for the stadium. They could continue to add their $7 million a year to their reserve with no risk (and not reduce demandincrease supply by increasing the number of seats).

Finally, what is with the video that shows the scoreboard reading R. Riders? I guess they own both version of the name now.
