The May 2020 release notes for the CFLdb family of sites list the improvements made in the past month. Read on for details.
The following changes have been made to CFLdb Statistics since the last report:
Along with numerous other cosmetic, data, performance, administrative, or infrastructure related bug fixes and enhancements (47 commits this month).
Special acknowledgement to contributors Mark and Chris this month.
The new tiebreaker process corrects the fundamental issues that have been apparent in the results early in the season. While previous attempts to correctly order the standings decided to take into account games-in-hand (fewer games played), the current process, and I believe correctly, performs the tie breaking formula straight up as if the season ended today. This may result in a team with games-in-hand losing the tiebreaker and being ranked lower. This is accurate, if the season ended today. Since the season doesn’t end today, the team with the games-in-hand has opportunity to break the tie and advance themselves, but they do not deserve to be ranked higher in the tiebreaker, for logical and technical reasons.
Previously, tiebreaker information on CFLdb Statistics was hidden and unavailable to visitors. This information is now provided in the season Week-by-week pages, allowing the calculations used to break ties to be seen. Tiebreaker information is available in a popup by clicking the sort/hamburger icon next to the team; inspection of tie breaking results is encouraged and any errors reported so the calculations may be corrected. This feature will be expanded to the final season standings soon. Documentation of the terms and codes used in the tiebreaker explanation will be added in June.
Please provide any feedback on the accuracy, value and presentation of the tiebreaker information so this information can be used as this feature evolves.
The next priority will be the continued refactoring of pages. The league season standings page will be finished, followed by the next highest priority page.
The 2020 season information will remain as is until the league concretely announces 2020 plans. While days go by without games being played, the schedule will remain as originally announced as a reference until either a new schedule or cancelled season is provided as the league’s direction.
If I missed your contribution this or any other month, please send a gentle reminder so I may correct the record. And apologies for the unintended slight.
Send all contributions, corrections and suggestions to me via methods found on the Contact page. All contributions are credited, with more prominent credit for the largest statistics contributors on the CFLdb Statistics contributor page. The contributor list will, therefore, reflect the true owners of the site, those that research, compile and contribute data and corrections.
