2014 Rosters and Game Participation Added

Today I’ve added 2014 team rosters and regular season game participation numbers from unofficial data. Links to the roster pages can be found on each team’s 2014 season page. Playoff and Grey Cup participation will soon be added, and later 2015 rosters will be added. Update Oct. 11, 2015: 2015 rosters have been added up to games as of September 28th, 2015. A final update will be made at the end of the season.

The data has been compiled from published team depth charts which set the 46-man roster. Where known, the two player game scratches were recorded, but this information was available for less than half the games. This means player participation numbers are inflated. Information is welcome to correct this data.

While games played and started numbers are the most affected by this situation, player names, jerseys, classification and positions may also have errors. These will be corrected when identified. When official league data is available, the db will be updated to reflect those numbers.

Update Sept. 27, 2015: 2014 Playoff and Grey Cup participation has been updated. Also, a number of spelling, player classification, jersey and position errors were corrected in the years 2010–2014.

Playoff and Grey Cup participation will be added in the next couple weeks. Before the end of the season I plan on adding unofficial 2015 roster and participation numbers. Going forward, I will try to provide updates during the current season after each third of the season and after the Grey Cup. Update Oct. 11, 2015: 2015 rosters have been added up to games as of September 28th, 2015. A final update will be made at the end of the season.

Why is this data so late this year and why is it unofficial? In the past I have used official information from the prior year from the league published Facts, Figures and Records publication. This has been coming out later and later each year, and this year is still unreleased as of my writing this. I suspect that the publication is being abandoned to be replaced by the CFL.ca refresh that is hinted/rumoured to occur in Sept. 2015 (only 5 days left for that to occur). Rather than wait for the unknown, I have decided to compile the data myself, as much as it goes against my principles of manually compiling data, especially when missing information results in inaccuracies. When the statistic publication/site update situation is worked out, I will determine which direction I will go in the future. However, without any assurances, I am left with a strong preference to go on my own.

I would rather spend my time on improving the site and database rather than compiling and entering data. I know there are many data collectors out there that already have this data (without the inaccuracies). If you are one of these collectors, and are willing to contribute and share, please contact me. I can provide templates and instructions on the format of the data record required. Major and ongoing contributions are recognized and rewarded.

Other Changes

Some other fixes were implemented today as well:

  • Years in league was updated. The formula now does not count a first season in which no games were played (but time was spent on injured or reserve list) as a rookie year, but does count subsequent years in which no games were played (but appeared on a CFL roster) as a year played. Previously, any year which no games were played was not counted as a year, reducing the experience of some veterans who spent a year on an injured list. I believe this is closer to the official recording of years in league.
  • At the bottom of the team year roster page, the Player Experience section now lists the number of players with 2-4 years experience and number of players in each category to start at least one game during the season.

More changes to come!
