Published on April 2nd 2012 at 7:16 PM

A $2.333 million profit on increased revenue and slightly decreased expenses sets a club record and pads their surplus fund. League revenue increased 6% or about $120,000, while club revenue was up a whopping 32% and community support/special event revenue more than doubled.

The McMahon Question

Published on March 31st 2012 at 8:29 PM

The question of a major stadium project in Calgary, be it a overhaul or new complex, is just as sensitive to discuss publicly as anywhere else in the country, much like new hockey arenas (which the media like to discuss ad nauseam, even if owners and public officials are saying nothing). Publicly demanding new facilities can only turn public opinion and therefore the political tides as well.

Lansdowne Design Defended

Published on March 31st 2012 at 8:20 PM

No matter what is presented, the design will be attacked from one side or another, and choices in the design will be criticized for being removed or being left in due to the cost. It is an absolute no-win situation in a town as politically charged as Ottawa.

Olympic Stadium Garage Collapses

Published on March 31st 2012 at 8:04 PM

Catching up on this from early March. If you look at where the Saputo Stadium is and the entrance to the parking garage off Rue Viau, while part of the Olympic Stadium complex, it is not really near the stadium itself.

Hard to think that neglecting the infrastructure (even if this is an error) you have spent so much on is a wise thing to do.

Flames Increase Ownership Stake in Stampeders

Published on March 29th 2012 at 8:06 PM

The catalyst of one Stampeder partner wishing to sell his stake led to the Calgary Flames taking majority ownership of the Stampeders, though the exact makeup of ownership stakes was not revealed. The Flames have between a 50 and 75% stake is what we are led to believe from official comments and rumours.

The reasoning stated for the change now is to provide the sports management group behind the Flames and their properties greater control in the Stampeder club for cross-promotion and marketing. Also raised was the possibility of the Flames/Stampeders combining on a proposal for a downtown stadium/arena complex to replace the Saddledome and McMahon Stadium.

In an postscript, the Stampeders extended the contract of coach John Hufnagel until the end of the 2016 season.

Where Are They Now? Dan Wicklum

Published on March 15th 2012 at 5:23 PM

Dan Wicklum, an aquatic ecologist and Environment Canada “bureaucrat”, is heading up Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA). COSIA is not without its controversy, funded by the 12 oil sands producers, but is "run by scientists for scientists" according to Wicklum.

This is a long way from the four years Wicklum had as a linebacker in the CFL with Winnipeg and Calgary from 1988-91.

Lansdowne Missing Complexity

Published on March 12th 2012 at 7:43 PM

An architect should be able to provide more precise criticism of a project than this. When you can’t be specific, you are speaking of your own tastes, not standard practice flaws.
