The 18 months lead up to the team taking the field will provide some needed time to get familiar with the name once announced, because the build up to it will only result in a lot of initial rejection and disappointment.

An Ottawa Team Name on Target?

The build up for this name didn’t live up to its reveal. Even after it sunk in and I got the double-R reference, it didn’t make sense to have it in the middle of a word. And singular beginning with a vowel. While it may work for a product, I’m not sure it is right for a team. Do players want a target on their helmets as a logo?

Rush a Potential Name in Ottawa

I can see the appeal of Ottawa Rush (paywall), much less forced than River Rats and Rafters, but I don’t think it is something a team 150 years ago was named (same with Lightning or Wild). Maybe they will find something that is timeless, maybe not, but any complaints out of Saskatchewan about the name selected being lame can be pointed right back at themselves.
