Re-positioning Regina's Stadium Bid

Published on February 6, 2011 9:57 AM by dbo.

It is obvious that the re-positioning of this project relates to making it palatable for a federal contribution. Inner-city development was never mentioned in any stadium articles before but now it is the forgotten impetus behind the project. The feds have $1 billion to spend and they are aligned ideologically with the Saskatchewan government, so this is just a laying of groundwork to allow their investment in a "community building" project. Political spin and ego projects hurt the case for replacing our infrastructure that has always been publicly owned and provided great return.

Let me be clear. I support refurbishment or new stadium in Regina. I do not support a $430 million (cost sure to rise) domed stadium when Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton have developed their plans with greater constraints. I know many Reginans believe it is time they got their $100 million from the feds and a dome with year-round use provides the business plan to make it work. I just think it is a case of the underdog shooting for the moon when they don't even need to reach orbit.
