STATISTICAL SCORING RULES
SECTION 13 — PENALTIES
- Five items are recorded with regard to penalties:
- Times Penalized,
- Yards Penalized,
- First Downs Gained by Penalties,
- Penalties Declined By,
- Gains Forfeited on Penalties.
- Times Penalized include those penalties declined by the opposition, double penalties against both teams that are often cancelled out against each other and multiple penalties called against one team on a single play.
- Yards Penalized are measured from the point of penalty to the point where the ball is next put into play.
- Refer to Section 1 for treatment of first downs gained by penalties.
- Gains Forfeited by Penalty are the yardage gains that would normally be recorded by the offence on offensive plays from scrimmage and have been nullified by application of a penalty. Gains Forfeited by Penalty do not occur on special teams plays, nor do they occur on defensive return plays (i.e. fumble returns, interception returns).
